Pilar Square - 2025

Vendel & de Wolf

The Dutch artists connect hundreds of tubes imitating bamboo with LED lights that can be interpreted in different ways: from a distance, a bonfire in motion, and close up, a hypnotic dance of lights.

The work

‘Sign’ is a light show that turns Pilar Square into a space for visitors to think and reflect. Created by the Vendel & de Wolf collective, the work plays with interactions between light, historical architecture and the audience, encouraging observers to move around in order to discover changes of perspective brought about by the light work.

This installation consists of a series of structures that give out light via geometrical shapes, creating a fascinating contract with the environment that surrounds them. The work, which has been exhibited at various well-known festivals around the world, comes to Zaragoza with its characteristic use of hundreds of tubes imitating bamboo and programmed LED lights, forming a work that changes according to viewers’ perspectives.

‘Sign’ plays with the duality of perceptions. From a distance, the installation invokes the image of a bonfire, with illuminated tubes that simulate the movement of flames. As observers get closer, the work reveals its true nature: a hypnotic dance of lights that move along the bamboo poles, creating free-flowing light patterns that seem to dematerialise in the air. This play of light and shadow encourages audiences to think about perception, the contrast between what is near and far, what is permanent and volatile.

The artists Vendel & de Wolf have created a work that acts as a visual signal, a ‘sign’ that communicates with observers through dynamism and contrast. Here, light is not just a decorative element; it is a language of its own creation, a game of shapes and shadows that leads us to reflect on our relationship with the environment and art.

In this show, ‘Sign’ does not only act as a light installation, but it also sends a message: a call to observe, to stop and think. Light flows like an artistic expression that is constantly evolving, where each second gives rise to a new meaning, a new form that can only be appreciated at the present time.
